There’s a certain time of year when teaching can start to feel… heavy. Testing season is coming, your pacing feels tight, and suddenly you’re wondering: “How am I supposed to review everything we’ve learned without reteaching the whole year?” I used to feel that pressure too. The stress of trying to cram in review, find extra practice, and still move forward with new content was overwhelming. That’s when I realized I couldn’t treat review like an “extra” anymore — it had to be built into my classroom routine all year long. I needed an easy way to spiral review all year long. That’s where math menus and spiral review completely changed the game for me.
Spiral Review Without Whole-Group Overload
Instead of stopping instruction to do big, full-class review packets, I use math menus to keep skills fresh in a way that feels manageable — for me and my students.
Math menus allow me to spiral skills from the very beginning of the school year. As soon as we learn a concept, it goes into the rotation. Students continue seeing those skills again and again in small, consistent ways. That repetition helps them:
✔ Retain information longer
✔ Make connections between different math topics
✔ Build confidence because skills don’t feel “brand new” months later
By the time testing season rolls around, we’re not cramming — we’re reviewing things students have seen all year.

Built-In Differentiation (Without Extra Planning)
One of my favorite parts about using math menus for spiral review is that different students can be reviewing different skills at the same time.
Not every student needs the same review. Some still need practice with multi-digit multiplication, while others are ready to focus on fractions or decimals. Math menus make that possible without me creating 10 different assignments.
With menus, I can:
✔ Assign specific review tasks to individual students
✔ Target skills students personally need to revisit
✔ Offer choice while still guiding their practice
Students feel successful because the work matches their needs — and I don’t feel stretched trying to reteach everything to everyone.
Why This Matters Most During Testing Season
When testing season approaches, teacher stress skyrockets. There’s pressure to review, cover gaps, and make sure students remember content from months ago.
Because I spiral all year through math menus:
✔ I’m not scrambling to find review
✔ I’m not staying up late making last-minute packets
✔ I’m not panicking about forgotten skills
Review is already happening — in warm-ups, independent work, and small group time. Testing season feels calmer because we’ve been preparing all along.
