Start Using Writing in Your Math Class

Looking for some ways to start using writing into your math class? Then you are in the right spot!

I know…we have all heard students complain “this isn’t ELA class!” when we have asked them to write. But with a few good tools, most of those complaints will go away.

The benefits of writing are huge, so it is something that should be used in every class! One of the main reasons I love writing is that you can make connections between every subject. Cross-curricular reinforcement is always a great strategy. But lets just focus on math for now.

So why is writing important in math class?

-It reveals student misconceptions.

-It requires students to think deeply about the content.

-It can help tap into student interests.

-It teaches skills that carry over to other subjects and daily life.

-It helps students hold on to key information.

I have created a FREE RESOURCE on Teachers Pay Teachers. It is a great way to start using writing in your math class. The resource includes templates and best practices on the following activities:

-Ask and Answer

-Notice and Wonder

-Same But Different

-Peer Feedback

-That Doesn’t Make Sense

-Always, Sometimes, Never

  1. I saw in one of your posts to include, “To my future forgetful self,” as a must-do activity. I am intrigued! Can you tell me more about this?

    1. Of course! It is based off of the ideas from the book “Building Thinking Classrooms” where it talks about giving students ownership over their note taking. The book is awesome and I would highly recommend it!

    1. Yes, I sent it out to my email list! But I am also about to post it in a blog post, so stay tuned!
